This series explores three significant periods in architectural history—Gothic Revival (July 24), Brutalism (July 31), and Postmodernism (August 7). Noted experts discuss the physical characteristics of each movement and how culture, politics, and technical innovations are reflected in the architecture of those times. Presenters also provide information on how to give a self-guided tour of local examples of each type of architecture.

Brutalism

Derived from the French term  béton brut, the Brutalist movement in architecture is characterized by a predominant use of raw concrete and blocky forms. Susan Piedmont-Palladino, National Building Museum curator and architecture professor at Virginia Tech’s Washington Alexandria Architecture Center, explores this form of architecture that many love to hate.  1.5 LU (AIA)
