Portraits in Design is a lecture series that takes a biographical look at the iconic designers whose past work has had a lasting impact on our contemporary built world. The series delves into the life stories of important architects, landscape architects, and planners to better understand how their personal lives had an influence on their professional careers. Portraits in Design continues in 2014 with an exploration of Los Angeles-based figures in association with the exhibition Overdrive: L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940–1990.

Charles and Ray Eames propelled modern design into the mainstream through their furniture, textiles, and architecture. Their Case Study House #8 stands today as an emblem of the southern California lifestyle, blurring inside and outside through a fresh, dynamic architectural composition. Patricia Kirkham, professor at the Bard Graduate Center, explores the couple’s enduring legacy. 1.5 LU (AIA)
