Harriet Tubman...at the intersection of Legacy and Landscape

Date:
Tuesday, September 20, 2022
Time:
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Harriet Tubman Visitor CenterIn-person and Virtual Program

How can the preservation of landscapes strengthen our understanding of our shared history? The story of Harriet Tubman’s journey from an enslaved person, to a fearless leader of emancipation, to a giant of American history is one of the most dynamic examples of the power of individuals to affect the American cultural narrative. Join us as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Tubman’s birth and explore how the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Church Creek, Maryland and the newly opened Harriet Tubman National Historical Park in Auburn, New York are working to protect and share her legacy through the preservation of the landscapes that shaped her life. Speakers include Jessica Bowes, Cultural Resource Specialist for Women’s Rights and Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks in New York, Chris Elcock, Associate Principal at GWWO Architects, Dr. Kaye Wise-Whitehead, PhD, Associate Professor of Communications and African American Studies at Loyola University in Maryland, and Deanna Mitchell, Superintendent of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Maryland.

The program will be followed by a reception in memory of longtime advocate and supporter of the National Building Museum, Darwina L. Neal. Darwina began her career in landscape architecture with the National Park Service (NPS) in 1965, working on Lady Bird Johnson’s Beautification Program. She was the first woman elected president of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and rose as a leader within the landscape architecture profession.
