One of the guiding design principals of the Museum's Hive is the perception of sound within a structure. In fact, the designers liken the aural experience within the larger dome of the installation as standing in a clearing in the woods - some sound escapes between the tubular walls, while other sound is reflected back to you. Explore the relationships between acoustics and architecture
with Chris Pollock, PE, associate principal of the
global design and engineering firm Arup. Through audience participation, he
demonstrates how architectural form, like Hive’s catenary arch shape and the
volume of the Museum's Great Hall, impacts our experience of sound, perception,
and emotions. This program takes place in and around Hive.
