There is a growing network of people committed to preserving Kirkbride Hospitals, such as St. Elizabeths. Urban explorers, paranormalists, and historic preservationists see potential in these often-intimidating mental health facilities from the 19th century opportunities for reuse, and appropriate memorials to the many thousands who lived, died, and were often buried or cremated there. Robert Kirkbride, Ph.D, dean, Parsons School of Constructed Environments, and relative of Thomas Kirkbride, considers the new life these hospitals for the mentally ill can play today. This program complements the Museum’s exhibition Architecture of an Asylum: St. Elizabeths 1852-2017 which will be on view prior to the program.
