Paper artist Josefina Hernandez explores patterns found within the National Building Museum and the illustrative history of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Josefina Hernández is a New York based artist and illustrator born in Bogotá, Colombia. Her art practice consists of paper cut works that are meticulously carved with an x-acto knife from a single sheet of paper. Largely inspired by nature’s sinuous and organic forms, Josefina explores the relationship between us and the spaces we inhabit. In her work, she seeks to convey both the spiritual and material realities of human existence juxtaposing architectural elements with the natural world.

Paper-cutting Storytime is presented as a Special Daytime Program as part of The Playhouse. The National Building Museum and the Folger Shakespeare Library, in association with the University of South Carolina, are partnering this summer to present The Playhouse. Starting on Friday, July 1–and running through August 28, 2022–visitors can step back in time with the Bard for the latest iteration of the Museum’s Summer Block Party.
