Family Afternoon: Parks and Picnics

National Cherry Blossom Festival Family Program

The Tokyo Picnic Club was founded in 2002 to commemorate the bicentennial of the founding of London’s Pic-Nic Club and to stand up for the “Picnic Right” of the residents of Tokyo, where public park area per person is only 5.2 m2.

Join us for an event inspired by the Tokyo Picnic Club's innovative work. Bring a blanket, a basket, and a lunch and have your picnic in style in the Great Hall. You will:

  • Compete for a prize for the best picnic in our Parks and Picnics Picnic Contest.
  • Design your own park with staff from the National Capital Planning Commission.
  • Taste premium teas and treat the family to some favorite sweets from Teaism. Teaism offers a collection of Asian-inspired teahouses that infuse the cultures of tea and the ideals of Teaism with the informality and casualness of America in critically acclaimed restaurants in D.C. and Alexandria.
  • Make a wish on our National Building Museum Wish Tree, designed and built by the students from our Design Apprenticeship Program.

FREE. Drop-in Program. Alcohol is not permitted. Prepare for your picnic by checking out photos from the Tokyo Picnic Club's 2008 Picnopolis Series.

Parks and Picnics is inspired, but not hosted, by the Tokyo Picnic Club.
