Tour the historic grounds of St. Elizabeths in
Washington, D.C., home of the federal institution founded before the Civil War
as the Government Hospital for the Insane. Nancy
Witherell, U.S. General Services Administration, leads a walking tour of
the West Campus of the National Historic Landmark and discusses the history of
its development, its significant role in the care of the mentally ill, and its
future as the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Presented during National Historic Preservation Month, this program complements
the Museum’s exhibition Architecture of
an Asylum: St. Elizabeths 1852-2017.
