DAP II: Furnishing Homeward Presentation & Reception
|
The National Building Museum's spring 2013 Design Apprenticeship Program (DAP) challenged teen participants to design and construct furniture for families in the Transitional Housing Corporation's (THC) housing program. Using resources in and outside of the Museum, participants explored how good design can maximize a small space and the role of design in creating a home. Participants worked alongside Museum staff and volunteer design professionals and in collaboration with THC staff and families to determine the appropriate size, aesthetics, and concept for the final projects. During the final presentations the student design teams will share their process and finished products, and explain how their projects solve the needs the client families. The Design Apprenticeship Program teaches teens that they can change the world around them and eneact positive change through good design. As participants meet real community clients, explore materials, brainstorm solutions, and accomplish projects together, they learn the importance of teamwork, creative problem solving, and advocacy skills. For more information, please contact Outreach Programs at dap@nbm.org or 202.272.2448.
