The Designing for Disaster Teaching Kit is recommended for teachers of students in grades 7-9.

Learn how to bring resilient building techniques and basic city planning concepts into your classroom at this educator workshop. Examine the effects of natural disasters on the built environment and learn how building professionals, homeowners, and planners use design to mitigate damages. 

Museum staff will model lesson plans, demonstrate teaching tools, and explore materials from Designing for Disaster, the National Building Museum’s newest classroom-ready teaching kit.

Each school represented by an attending teacher will receive one Designing for Disaster Teaching Kit at no cost. 

The goals of the Designing for Disaster Teaching Kit are to:

• Introduce students to the people, processes, and choices involved in designing and constructing disaster resilient buildings and communities.

• Increase student awareness of the relationship between people and the built environment, including how people affect their surroundings and how their surroundings affect them.

• Increase student awareness of the relationship between the natural environment and the built environment and how these are interdependent.
