More than 37 million people pass through D.C.’s Union Station every year, prompting Travel + Leisure to rank it the third most-traveled tourist destination in the world. With its success have come challenges as the station reaches its intermodal capacity. To ensure the station’s viability into its second century, stakeholders plan to address passenger capacity while integrating it with surrounding neighborhoods through the construction of Burnham Place, three-million-square-feet of mixed-use space, parks, and plazas to be developed over the rail yard. Lezlie Rupert of Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, David Zaidain of Amtrak, and David Tuchmann of Akridge discuss the creation and implementation of the plan.
