Design Apprenticeship Program Final Presentation

Design Apprenticeship Program NMNH Carts

In the National Building Museum’s fall 2012 Design Apprenticeship Program (DAP), participants gathered each Saturday for seven weeks to focus on modular building blocks and how they are used in design and construction. Through a series of hands-on activities, they first learned the basics of design and explored various building blocks such as bricks, tiles, wood, tubing, and cinder blocks. Participants then divided into teams and designed and fabricated furniture that incorporated modular building blocks as a key design element.

Volunteer design professionals worked closely with participants to help them fine tune their design skills, strengthen tool use abilities, and incorporate aesthetics into the final design.
