Alexander Robey ShepherdAlexander Robey Shepherd performed herculean tasks as he built the capital’s infrastructure in the decade following the Civil War, but his reputation remains tarnished because of questions about his methods and his integrity.  John P. Richardson, author of Alexander Robey Shepherd: The Man Who Built the Nation’s Capital, provides insights into this intriguing figure, who spent the second half of his life building a silver-mining operation in remotest Mexico.  Alexander Shepherd is arguably the most important local figure in the second half of the 19th century, yet Richardson has written the first full-length biography.  Come and find out more about the man they called “The Boss” and why.  After his talk, Richardson signs copies of the book, which is available in the Museum Shop.
