Featured Designer: Charles and Ray Eames
Husband and wife team Charles (1907–1978) and Bernice 'Ray' (1912–1988) Eames were one of the 20th century's most formidable design duos. Their collaboration began in the early 1940s when both were at the Cranbrook Academy of Art outside of Detroit. They eventually moved to Los Angeles where they set up a studio and worked in such varied fields as architecture, furniture design, film, industrial and graphic design, and photography. Regardless of the project, their work always reflected the belief that good design should incorporate beauty and utility and that this could often be found in everyday objects. They traveled extensively, collecting pieces epitomizing their design philosophy which were then displayed in their home and office. Among the Eameses’ most notable accomplishments were major innovations in the use of molded plywood for furniture, as well as cutting-edge designs for chairs made of plastics. They also designed and built a house for the Case Study project. Hailed as masters of modern design, they were recognized with the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1979.
